I saw the comments over the weekend on the Saugus=20 Ironworks and wanted to add a few remarks. I=20 discussed the ironworks and the relationship of=20 Joseph Jenks with John Hull in the book on John=20 Hull and the Massachusetts Mint. The standard=20 history of the Saugus ironworks is:
Hartley=92 Edward Neal. Ironworks on the Saugus:=20 the Lynn and Braintree Ventures of the Company of=20 Undertakers of the Ironworks in New England=92=20 Norman: University of Oklahoma Press=92 1957.
Also there is a very informative pamphlet on=20 Joseph Jenks, who worked as an independent=20 contractor at the ironworks:
Carlson=92 Stephen P. Joseph Jenks: Colonial=20 Toolmaker and Inventor=92 Eastern National Park and=20 Monument Association=92 1985. This is sold at the=20 Saugus Iron Works restoration site. It was first=20 published in 1973 then revised in 1975 and 1978.
Additionally, there is a very good book on the=20 Saugus ironworks, with excellent drawings. It is=20 written for young adults, but includes as much=20 information on the daily operation of ironmaking,=20 if not more, as is found in Harley's book:
Clarke=92 Mary Stetson. Pioneer Iron Works=92 Philadelphia: Chilton Books= =92 1968.
It really is a very interesting site to visit.=20 It is only about 10 miles north of Boston and=20 would be worth a side trip during the C4=20 convention, if you could find someone with an=20 automobile (allow about three hours for round=20 trip travel and the tour). Sunday would be the=20 best day to go because the traffic would be=20 lighter getting out of and then back into Boston=20 (about 30 minutes each way).
Lou
