Hi all - -
There have recently been a number of ideas and misconceptions expressed
about "Peck" - the book. A.K.A. English Copper, Tin and Bronze Coins in
the British Museum 1558-1958 (SECOND Edition) that are misleading or
downright incorrect <s>.
Several of these are:
(1) "Peck only lists coins in the British Museum". NOT CORRECT! Both
the first and second editions state "Coins in several other public and
private collections which are not at present represented in the Museum
collection have also been included, so that the Ctalogue provides
virtually a corpus of this series. (About 10 museums and 30 private
collections). Specimens in the British Museum are readily distinguished
by the letters BM"
(2) First edition is dated 4 September 1959; Second edition 5 January
1964. There may be a 3rd or later edition, it is past due.
(3) The second edition title is incorrect - the collection in the
second edition is extended to 1963.
(4) There has been a lot of guesswork about circulation of regal and
counterfeit coinage in Britain. This subject is extensively covered in
Appendix 4-9.
(5) Counterfeiting in each regal era is discussed in depth.
(6) A considerable amount of discussion covers minting techniques and
practice at the Tower Mint.
I recommend that everyone read "Peck - the book." second edition if
there is no later edition.
Jim/CNLF
