Yesterday my wife accidently left her purse at Kmart. When she discovered what she had done she rushed back to the store but the purse was gone. Besides being hysterical when she once more returned home, she was convinced that anyone shopping at Kmart would never return her purse. (Though she had just been shopping there herself!!) Though I thought this very elitist in viewpoint, I wasn't about to argue as she proceeded to cancel all the credit cards and her cell phone service. Within the hour we got a call from Kmart saying the purse had been turned in. When she checked everything including a hundred dollars in cash was untouched. I think honestly is a wonderful thing. I just wish the person who had turned in the purse could be rewarded. However, as corny as it sounds, I think the person was rewarded. Roger
Neil Rothschild <nrothschild@nmctech.com> wrote: When I was about 10 years old I worked Saturdays at my Dad's retail store. He would send me to the post office to buy stamps and whatnot. One day I gave the clerk a $10 bill for stamps and got back change for a $20 bill. This was in 1966 or so; $10 was a lot of money, especially for a kid. That was probably my first difficult moral dilemma. I gave the extra money back because I was concerned that he would be deducted for his register shortage. Working in a retail store, I had a feeling for that early on. I have always wondered about post office policy back then J
I also took Friday's take to the bank. Here I was, a ten year old kid, walking 3 or 4 blocks to the bank with about $600 - $900 in a paper sack, which was approximately equal to all the cash in the known universe. My father had a theory that no one would bother a little kid carrying a lunch sack. It scared me to death at first, but I got used to it. This was down in an urban area (the Howard/Eutaw Street retail district in Baltimore). It was safer then it is now, but even then it was a little rough down there. My father always did little things like that to me as part of the growing up process. Those were interesting days.
Regards,
Neil

Agreed...and when people offer a monetary reward, I try to tell them it would negate the great feeling I got from the deed. Why should I be rewarded for not taking what didn't belong to me in the first place. That feeling is worth more than the 200 dollars. The money would not have changed your life, and probably would have been spent unwisely, but now you are able to hold you head up and tell the story and feel good about what you did years ago.

I once was walking accross the parking lot outside a convention center (I think it was the original AstroDome in Houston) when I saw something drop out of a woman's pocket. She was about 50 yards ahead of me so it took a little while until I saw what it was. I picked up 2 $100 bills crumpled up. For a moment, I thought what should I do. If it were 2 $1 bills, I probably would have just put them in my pocket, but $200 was too much. I started yelling and gesturing for the lady to wait a minute as I ran up to her. She probably thought I was a nut but she was with a man so she probably felt the two of them could handle me.
When I finally reached her I was out of breath and showed her the money. She looked amazed and checked her pocket. She was extremely grateful and asked what she could do for a reward. I asked her to buy me a cup of coffee and we called it even.
Just another of life's funny stories.
