    Thanks, Alan. I really don't think it is a counterfeit, but thought
    it worthy of checking. I've seen several Hibernias offered as
    contemporary counterfeits, but don't think they are. Most are just
    very late die states, often with porous surfaces from environmental
    exposure. Some are modern fabrications (generally cast, some
    electro). If you were a counterfeiter (e.g., in Bristol), why would
    you counterfeit a Hibernia, given their undesirable status, low
    profit potential, etc. Plus, plating brass doesn't sound cheap
    (multiple production steps), and the metal costs are about
    equivalent. My analysis suggests that Wood was making very little
    (in fact, probably losing) on each coin made, so there would not be
    any real financial incentive to counterfeit. But . . . who knows,
    the piece is curious, and worth a look. (I call my purchases like
    this "Colonial Coin Lottery" buys!) Syd
