Ray Williams <njraywms@optonline.net> wrote: Hi Guys, I checked with the Colonial Williamsburg Curator, Erik Goldstein, and this is his reply with respect to Steve's question about the dug Machin's piece: Hi Ray, the dug 1774 1/2d is certainly a Vlack 3-74A. However, it was mis-catalogued (well before I got here) in the first print runs of said book. I have corrected it for the latest edition too bad the old editions are still floating around for sale! Please feel free to pass this on to whomever. See you in Milwaukee? Cheers, Erik Erik Goldstein Curator of Mechanical Arts and Numismatics The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation P.O. Box 1776 Williamsburg, VA 23187 USA (757) 565-8956 fax (757) 565-8752 egoldstein@cwf.org
Nice David...thanks....I wish I knew you were going....maybe when Craig goes, he can just take a quick look at the reverse of catalog # 00239-17A, a 1774 British halfpenny found between John Crumps house and Burdett's Ordinary. According to the booklet I purchased there, because of the considerable wear, it is uncertain whether this is genuine or counterfeit. The obverse is Machin's mills 3 and should be paired with 74A, and since it is listed as 1774, I assume it is. It is plated in "The Coins of Colonial America" booklet on the 3rd case plates, coin number 83. Steve F
