I use calipers regularly at work. I have had both dial and digital=20
over the years. I currently have both a Mitutoyo and an SPI digital=20
pair (both stainless jaws). I paid over $100 for both I use them with=20
care on coins. I think plastic might be better for coins, but the idea=20
that plastic won't scratch doesn't seem right. Whatever you have, use=20
care. For my money, I'd buy the digital Mitutoyo Dan mentions.=20
Mitutoyo is a brand worth owning if accuracy and long-life is=20
important. Digital is good becasue of the ability to have inch and mm=20
readouts. My batteries seem to last even longer than Dan mentions,=20
maybe 4+ years. The places you mention are not the place to buy=20
calipers. I think Dan's offerings are solid and competitive. I've=20
bought from Travers Tool (www.travers.com) and Enco (www.use-
enco.com). They would be good places for comparison shopping. For the=20
record, the dial aren't all that reliable. They have a lot of working=20
parts, and tiny screws. They can get chips of metal in the rack, and=20
then they skip the tooth making measurement errors. I had to have mine=20
worked on by a watchmaker a few times, and I had to replace a cyrstal=20
a time or two. Don't drop them on concrete, but the digital Mitutoyo=20
seem to take the knocks well. I really like the no moving parts of the=20
digital style. (I know that some of this input on the dial style does=20
not apply for numismatics, but mention it anyway).
