    Hey Clem,

    =20

Since you haven=92t responded, and apparently haven=92t bothered to re-read=
CNL-111, I thought I should un-confuse you as to your introducing me to Mi=
    ke, among other things.

    =20

It was the 2003 ANA in Baltimore and I was looking forward to finally meeti=
ng you and several other C4 members who had never met me before then. You=
=92d made arrangements to meet me the first day of the ANA the previous yea=
r when it was held in Philadelphia but was a no show on the bourse that day=
and I ended up selling several counterfeit farthing brockages I had brough=
t along to Larry Briggs instead =96 but that is another story.

    =20

When the Club bus arrived at the Convention I immediately headed for Bill A=
nton=92s table as he=92d called me and said he had something for me. When I=
arrived at his table I first met Dennis Wierzba who had just purchased a v=
ery nice and very crude 1776-dated Irish counterfeit halfpenny =96 see File=
    s/Counterfeit Halfpence/Hey Clem/Wierzba. Dennis left Bill=92s table and th=
en Bill showed me what he had brought for me. I would end up trading that c=
oin to Mike the next year at the pre-ANA in Monroeville as Mike and I had a=
rranged to bring our respective collections there to show to each other and=
discuss =96 see the second image in the Files/Counterfeit Halfpence/Hey Cl=
em/I7201C. (BTW Mike had, I believe, eight examples of Dennis Wierzba=92s =
=9276 Irish variety that he showed me in Monroeville =96 and the discussion=
went on for nearly three hours.) After I settled with Bill I immediately m=
ade my way to Mike=92s table and said hello.=20

    =20

The last time I had seen Mike was at a January 1996 WESPENEX show in White =
Plains, NY where he had been walking the bourse. Bill Anton was at my table=
at the 1996 WESPENEX show those seven years earlier, when I=92d spotted Mi=
ke walking the bourse and casually observing our transaction from a short d=
istance. I would later run into Mike near another dealer=92s table where I =
was purchasing two Geo. II halfpence and recall making a comment to him tha=
t dealing with Bill was like pulling teeth =96 or something to that effect =
=96 which immediately evoked a good belly laugh from Mike.

    =20

I didn=92t often run into Mike at shows, since I was doing mainly Cleveland=
, Ohio and PA shows since about 1992, but if you=92d read CNL-111 you would=
know that we had been corresponding about counterfeit halfpence, et al, si=
nce January =9291 and had been buying coins from his price lists before tha=
    t. I do recall the first time I met Mike in person, however, it too was at =
a Baltimore show on another Club bus trip =96 I don=92t recall if it was an=
ANA event or just another of the =93regular=94 Baltimore shows. Anyway, th=
is had to have been a couple or perhaps a few years before 1996, but someti=
me shortly after 1992, probably 1993, 1994 at the latest. I can correlate t=
his with other well documented events that were happening at this time, if =
you feel it=92s necessary. I recall also meeting Bob Vlack who was behind M=
ike=92s table with him, for the first and only time, but didn=92t realize a=
t the time that the =93kid=94 sitting beside me at the table, who also got =
into the conversation, was Vicken Yegparian.

    =20

Mike had first suggested that we do a paper together when he=92d reviewed T=
N-161 (1994) and has suggested this several times since on every paper he h=
elped me with over the years since and right up to 2005:

    Hi Gary,

I was also thinking of doing a short article on either the 2.3-T (et al) CT=
's and/or the 1785 7.1-D (et al) CT's. Most of the photos would be from CNL=
F (Barnsley, EAC '75, and Taylor coins). Have the copyright issues been res=
olved for all these photo sources? Also, I spoke to Vicken before he got ma=
rried, and he indicated that Stack's would cooperate with Ford photos.

    Mike

    =20

Obviously Mike sometimes knew what I was working on, since he had reviewed =
it prior to publication and, of course, I didn=92t always know what Mike mi=
ght be working on, but I certainly did know where he=92d gotten some of his=
ideas from as he did mine =96 see the third image in the Files/Counterfeit=
    Halfpence/Hey Clem/Ringo-4.

    =20

I do know that Mike trusted me implicitly, as well as who he would not trus=
t with privileged information as that was brought up in many of our snail m=
ail correspondences and later in email exchanges. You also learn this from =
working with several different co-authors; who can keep their mouth shut an=
d who cannot. Other people couldn=92t be left into the loop on a paper simp=
ly because they had a tendency make it their idea.

    =20

Back to your introducing Mike and I at the 2003 ANA: Well I suppose Mike co=
uld have forgotten ever having met me before since I=92d last seen him in p=
erson seven years earlier, but I don=92t think it=92s likely, especially si=
nce I don=92t recall the actual introduction. Even if there had been an int=
roduction I=92m sure it was unnecessary, but what I do remember is that I=
=92d suggested we all go down the street to HOOTERS for lunch but Mike sugg=
ested we go to the buffet style diner which was closer to the show. I also =
remembered Dennis Wierzba, Frank McGrath, Neil Rothschild, and you joining =
the group as well, Clem, and that the only person among them that I had met=
before that show was Mike Ringo. We passed around coins while we ate and d=
rank, and talked coins. I believe one of the coins I=92d brought for this =
=93show and tell=94 was the Device Trial Piece for the 1781-dated counterfe=
it halfpence. I also remember it being a big hit. Anyway, introduction or n=
ot, obviously you remember things differently than I do.

    =20

The two dealers that I=92ve attended coin shows with were both at the show,=
one was set up and the other had come on the Club bus trip with me. Unfort=
unately I couldn=92t find him so that he could have joined us for lunch. I =
suppose I could call either of both of them friends but I really can=92t sa=
y that I=92m particularly fond of either of them simply because I=92ve shar=
ed a bourse table and hotel expenses with them over the years.

    =20

Apparently, however, I never had a friendship with Mike Ringo, simply becau=
se you say so, Clem, as you=92ve apparently have put a copyright on that pr=
ivilege. Heaven forbid if anyone besides you decides that they were Mike=92=
s friend, not that I=92d ever mentioned that I was his friend in the first =
place. What I can tell you is that at the rate you are losing friends with =
these mean spirited contemptuous egroup postings perhaps by next year=92s C=
4 Convention you=92ll have more than David Palmer waiting on you in a dark =
alley (post 16673, nonregalresearch). I really don=92t think you want to te=
st my memory again, Clem, because the next time I=92ll be testing yours, an=
d will be able to back that up as well.
