When my Blacksmith Collection comes up for sale at Stacks I will=20
pinpoint the lot number to this group and the die polished remnants=20
of the "R" of BRTIT will be apparent. This is why it had remained a=20
legend misnomer since Wood's 1910 monograph. Its not that easy to=20
spot on high grade specimens and virtually impossible on specimens VF-
XF or below. For sure - its an attribution with much doubt. In this=20
situation the actual coin should be viewed. The only thing that=20
WORRIES me about my collection is I really don't think there is=20
anyone ALIVE that can properly describe the Wood 29 Starbuck/Peck=20
variations in my collection. The answer as to whether these coins=20
were struck in New York initially or whether the discarded dies were=20
brought to some unknown place in a Lower Canada (Montreal)?=20
counterfeiting operation for the striking of this Wood 29 MULE=20
coin ... this answer's best shot probably resides in these sub-
varieites in my collection which I have classified as Wood 29-a, Wood=20
29-b & Wood 29-c (UNIQUE, never seen). We shall see ... without the=20
specimens in front of me ... its impossible to describe at this point=20
in time ... extensive notes appear on the flips - as usual. One of=20
these pieces is of a Wood 29-c on a hard time token SIZED flan ...=20
what does this mean? ... some may say alot ... some may say=20
NOTHING ... did B.True's blank planchet travel with the discarded=20
Hard Time Token dies or was Wood 29 initially struck in New York? ...=20
HMMMMM .... maybe we will never know ...=20

P to me. Definitely not an R.

G.0899./B.0099 to the coin with the obverse being Gloriuvs III Vis=20
and the reverse being Btiti. Bitit is totally wrong in my opinion;=20
specifically when observing the "I" on the obverse. This "I" matches=20
the bases of the third and fifth letters on the reverse; thus Btiti.

    > The misspellings in the legends are simply errors due to someone=20
not knowing how to spell, which was quite common in those times. Or=20
he was drunk or hung-over. The Btiti of the reverse probably started=20
out to be BRITISH which was 'royally' bollixed.

    > Two examples showed the possibility of the 'L' in Gloriuvs=20
possibly being an 'E', thus possibly being Georiuvs. One of these=20
that showed this was JPL's example which is the highest graded 'Wood=20
33' known. The ones described as being BRTIT on the reverse that I=20
have seen, appear to be a metal flow problem and nothing else.=20=20
Trying to squeeze an 'R' in simply doesn't work.

The planchets had a consistent weight and quality suggesting an=20
    English origin.
