Good Morning Friends, I've finally had a chance to read through the entire C4 Newsletter. There's a lot of good stuff in there if you can make it past the president's message. The first article is about the Rhode Island Coinage Proposal by Franklin Noel. A well written and researched article written by a member whose name is not familiar to me. It's always nice to hear from a new voice. Nice article Franklin! I'm hoiping in the next C4N that Randy Clark will have another article on the same topic. Immediately following is an article by Charles Smith about the collector's tickets included with the CT Coppers sold in the Ford auction May 2005. It is interesting and can aid in trying to match your coins with pedigrees. Interesting and this weekend I'll need to find the Ford CT's I won at auction and check the tickets. Then comes a one paragraph note by Randy Clark about a SC Coinage proposal. This is wonderful information! If any of you find something interesting in your study of colonials, email it to Syd. Without Randy's article, there would have been 4" of blank white paper at the bottom of page 13, rather than an interesting tidbit of information! The next article is by me. I started writing one of those "filler" articles for Syd, the type that is on the bottom of page 47, that can be used to complete a page and not waste space. But the 1/2 page article slowly grew and I consulted some friends and learned while having a ton of fun. Although this article is about two pieces of NJ colonial bills, it is more about history than than numismatics. Then Syd Martin writes about the new CT Copper variety that was discovered by Chris Young. It seems to me that Chris makes way more than his fair share of discoveries!!! Only kidding Chris. But it goes to show that if you take the time to look at and attribute the low grade colonials, you too might discover a new variety! In the Counterfeit Corner, Bob Bowser and Gary Trudgen write an article about the "Bubble Gum" contemporary counterfeit die state study. Contemporary counterfeits have become very popular over the past 5 years or so. Much can be learned from studies like these! Next is another new name for me - Rick Iglar, writing about a Maris 11-H he added to his collection. Close study of the coins in our collections can be fun and rewarding. I applaud Rick for writing about this coin and sharing his observations and enthusiasm. I personally think the "floating 8" is an anomaly of the surface condition, but look forward to comments form others. Thanks Rick. The French American Corner had an article forwarded by Jack Howes. It is interesting to see what was circulating in Canada during colonial times. We tend to view Canada as a foreign country in our current views, but back in colonial days it was just another British colony as we all were. Then comes the article about the Colonial Happening at C4. This past event concentrated on VT Landscapes and Baby Heads. There's lots of coin images for you to compare your coins to those that were studied. I thank all for bringing their coins and Eric & those who organized the event. Next is my filler article on the bottom of page 47. It is about a 1783 Calendar Medal. I saw it at a coin dealer's shop and decided I couldn't live without it. It's in very good shape and a little piece of history from the year in which we won our independence. Page 48 is a report on the plaque dedication for the Boston Mint. What a wonderful thing to have been a very small part of! Hull's Mint was located at the present day site of the Macy's Department Store. The plaque was mounted on the side of the building. Someone asked if the precise location is known, to which I answered, "Yes, in the lingerie department". Of course I was kidding. Lou Jordan is the researcher/author who discovered the precise location. The next two pages are C4 Convention photos. Although they all have sentimental memories for me, they can not do justice for how much fun we actually have at C4. You all owe it to yourselves to experience at least one convention! Looking at the picture on page 51, you would think that in order to be a C4 Member, you must be a 7'10" basketball player! In reality we are all "average" in size (height) and Elizabeth Hahn is just a little petite. BUT don't let her stature fool you! She has the ANS library up and running at the new location and she'll be of immense help to any doing research. Plus, she's just a nice person. I like surrounding myself with nice (good) people. Life's too short to spend otherwise... On page 52 there were two letters to the editor. The first was by Buell Ish where he wrote complimenting me on an article I wrote. I strongly encourage members to write complimenting me... as opposed the the following letter by former C4 Member Steve Frank which publicly corrected and humiliated the C4 president!!! Only kidding, Steve is still a C4 member in good standing. Steve actually found a technical mistake in an article I wrote, that only a local would know. Thanks Steve! Now on page 53, Don Hartman lists the colonial coins he and his son found in 2008. I really need to get my detector fixed or purchase a new one! Don is also working on a database of NJ Copper found by detectorists. If anyone here knows of any, please let me or him know. The following pages are about the exhibits at the C4 Convention and the announcement that Buell Ish is stepping aside as Exhibits Chairman after all these years, and Eric Hildebrant has volunteered to take his place. Thank you Buell! Frank Steimle then reports the Secretary's Minutes from the membership meeting. Most of the meeting was dedicated to the new bylaw revisions. Then a couple pages about the books published by C4 that are available for purchase. Several advertisements, C4 auction PRL, new additions to the C4 Library and the classified ads. If you've read through all this, you're a better person than me. Hope you enjoy the newsletter as much as I did! Ray
