I've been trying to figure out the composition of a 1790's token I picked up a few months ago at 9.60 SG, and the possibilities seem endless working with water in a cup, some wire, and a hanger, but I did find something that can be very useful to others, who like me, enjoy taking these measurements. The above link has a formula to perform the SG calculation of any mix of alloys. I know that things were posted in the past on SG, and I saved most, but couldn't find anything like this, which gives a simple formula. when dealing with silver, we may be able to use this to both figure fineness and possibly a list of alloys. I haven't read enough yet on Spanish American silver, but I would imagine that silver from Potosi', Lima, Santiago, etc would use whatever they had the easiest and cheapest access to alloy with the silver. I don't want to re-invent the wheel, and hope the alloys are listed somewhere. If they are, and reliable, fineness precision should increase dramatically with my tests.
