Skip, Steve gave a good web address for learning about Lion Daalders. It also talks about Delmonte, who wrote The Silver Benelux, which is the book that is used for die varieties. From the pictures you posted, I see no reason to think this is anything but genuine. Lion Daalders are fairly common and most of mine I purchased for under $150 (many under $100!). I have about 30 Daalders and about 8 Half Daalders. I tried to get an example from each province/city that struck them, but there are a couple that are prohibitively rare. But anyone forming a collection of coins that circulated in the American Colonies should have a Lion Daalder placed right next to their example of an 8 Reales. Ray

Thanks Ray,
I got this from a local coin shop some time ago. The dealer bought it over the counter in a framed set entitled "Silver Dollars of America" or something like that. I don't remember for sure what the rest of the coins were but I think there was an 8 Reales, a Trade Dollar, Morgan and Peace, I don't remember there being a Bust and Seated included, but there may have been.

Ok Skip, Here's the scoop. Your Lion Daalder is a nice example of Delmonte 861. A stunning example of this variety is plated on plate 39 of the book. There is another dated Daalder of this type - 1597. The dateless version is a R-1 (on a scale of R thru R4) which is "rare". The dated version is an R-3, which is extremely rare. These coins were the world trade coins before the Spanish took that title. Most certainly these coins circulated freely in New Amsterdam, as well as the British colonies of the time. Have some fun with it - it's a nice type coin. Ray

I've had this Lion Dollar for a few years and get it out every once in a while to try and attribute it, each time with no success. It has no date and I can't seem to find an exact match anywhere. It has HOL in the legend which I assume is Holland but all the pieces listed in my Krause 17th century catalog are dated, the earliest being 1601. Might this be pre 1600? Any help? Pictures to follow. Thanks.
