I was in the middle of listing that connecticut I posted the other day, and while getting it ready I had a thought. This is a lower grade coin, but it's still an R6+, and people who don't have the means, but collect connecticuts, may still not be able to win it. I was wondering how to give the little guy a chance with some of the nicer coins that I see people donate to C4 and the ANS where you pretty much see the same people buying them, and often donating them back. They're fantastic people, and believe me, I REALLY appreciate it when I see those people do this...something that many of us can't, and they don't have to, but they do to benefit the clubs.
....but say you have someone on a very restricted budget where he's trying to build a set, and even the lower grade rarities are out of his price range because he has a rule he follows to not spend more than 100 dollars on ANY coin. How can he add an R6+ or R7 coin to his collection unless he get's lucky ruining his eyesight staring at ebay 6 hours a day for years?
There's a simple way to benefit the seller, buyer, and club, where the seller no longer HAS to donate, and realizes the value of his coin, the buyer, be it someone with deep or shallow pockets adds the coin to his collection at a fraction of it's value, and the club benefits through a sizable donation equal to the value of the coin.
It may not be a good thing, because it invloves gambling, but I've seen it done in other clubs I've belonged to. John has a coin worth $500 he's looking to sell, or donate, with the proceeds going to the club. Instead of the same 6 or 7 people who seem to always put out to buy these things, have a raffle and sell tickets at $25 each limited to twice the value of the coin. That would be 40 dickets in this case. The tickets are sold, the drawing is held, shallow and deep pockets are on an even playing field to become the new owner of the $500 coin at a price of $25, the club gets it's donation, and all participants were able to donate.
(If the coin is a true donation, the raffle would be limited to 20 tickets, the value of the coin, and the club accepting the entire $500, which would really be great for all involved, and those with the means wouldn't always feel an obligation to be the ones to step up to purchase a coin they already have 3 grades higher for the sake of the club)
I thought of this as a seller, but that certainly does not have to be the case. The coin or any other lot, which could be one of those beautiful coin cabinets or Dave Wnuck pieces. Those items are beautiful, and I'd love to be able to buy a raffle ticket to win one rather than have to embarass Roger, Syd and Tony T by on the auction floor<s>....seriously though. If that Dave Wnuck piece is goint to bring 700 dollars, sell 70 chances at 10 bucks apiece. The guys with the horsepower can always wait and scoop up the left overs..if only 40 are sold, the can divy up the final 30 and take 10 apiece.
The numbers I used are just for example. Ticket prices can be more or less...but I would honestly love to see something like this.
