Michael, absolutely true! My nly problem is that I have the experience in
American Pewterers, not British, but I suspect that the same holds true
with them, as we were once a part of you, and we tended to copy you in
those disciplines, as well as others. David

    David,=20

Silversmith marks here are generally of the same dimension as Hall
marks=C2=A0and quite small. About the same size as on the 1749 coin. I know
    nothing of Pewterers=C2=A0marks=C2=A0and=C2=A0defer to 30 years experience<=

Michael, you may be correct, but I have been studying this field for
approximately 30 years now. Pewterers typically used larger marks than did
silversmith' s and goldsmith's and the medium was typically larger. The
guilds were the controlling factor, and I suspect that they wanted the
pewterer's guild to stand out from the other guilds, and would have been
formed later than the other two guilds.=20
The more common man could not afford silverware of any kind, but pewter was
within reach of many. I have a book of pewterer's marks from the US, and
you would be surprised how large and intricate some of them are. In
addition, there are a few silversmith' s that also worked in pewter, and th=
    e
marks are different between the two metals. Same maker, different marks.

The countermarks seem a little large to be those=C3=82=C2=A0of=C3=82=C2=A0p=
    ewterers or
silversmiths. They would more likely resemble the cmks on this coin.

Paul, Here is the similar C/S to the one your friend has. I have not fullt
researched this one either. Just to let you know, all of the guilds in
England, had to approve marks to be used by pewterers, silversmith' s etc
before they could be used by the makers. It was a form of control over the
    industries. David
