.....something added from CCWC....CS.... die state?? VLDS becomes bifurcate=

    *** I'm cross-posting a question that has been answered before but I just c=
an't remember what it was. Bifurcated legends occur on both modern and colo=
nial coins. On another group, someone was surprised to learn that this can =
occur on one coin of the same die and not another, having only seen the eff=
ect with modern coins, where I assume since all have it of a particular die=
, it is an effect created at the time the die is made instead of the time t=
he coin is struck. The question once again....What causes bifurcated legend=
s on colonial era coins, and can we see an example of the same variety with=
heavy bifurcation alongside of one with no sign of the effect? ****
    =C2=A0
I forget if its low or high or if speed has anything to do with it...I want=
to ask but hate to ask something like that to the colonials group...might =
be considered off-topic. I'm a member of an errors group and someone posted=
a modern coin with this effect, and said this was always done at the time =
of die creation since all the coins had it...I said there are instances whe=
re not all have it and he asked to see any....hence I need the example with=
out the bifurcated legends. I can use Rogers but would like one with even l=
ess wear...reverse. So this can happen at die prep time or coin creation ti=
me. I want to also clarify if it is high or low pressure, if speed has anyt=
hing to do with it...which I guess speed is the same as high or low pressur=
e with this as the faster the ropes were pulled the faster and harder it wo=
uld strike the planchet and bounce back. lastly, with these, would a collar=
have prevented this if it is done at coin strike time?? Heck...I
really don't want to cross post because I don't want to cause any trouble,=

I know bifurcation is a result of strike pressure...is it too much or two l=
ittle. It can be caused by die punches, and also caused when blank planchet=
s struck....is it pressure, planchet prep or a combo?? I need all the info =

Hi Rickie...can I borrow your photo...009....I would like to know where the=
information is written about what causes the effect at the edges where the=
pressure causes the bottom of the I's etc to turn upward and run to the ed=
ges....also if I can find a high grade example of this variety without the =
    effect it would be great.

Steve, I just assumed the reverse had been planed off -- in the photo it
looks like you can see some file marks and the like.
