I bought a coin from Fred Weinberg, maybe the only one, many years ago and = now that I remember this I can partially answer a question that David P and= I was trying to figure out back in Boston over an aquistion that David rec= ently made. A whatisit sort of question. The coins in question have obverse= s that resemble very closely a Voce Populi type, I do have a picture, but n= ot with me the coin in question is a 'large' I'm guessing 1/2 ounce, 'moder= n' by that I mean 50 years more or less pure silver representation of a Voc= e Populi N1 halfpence or a N1 farthing since they are similar compared toge= ther or to the silver piece in question. Only the obverse was done to look = like a VP and sitting here typing this I can't remember what the reverse is= about except that it does not give an obvious hint to its maker. The engra= ving is pretty good work, not in the least bit crude.
David now has this 'whatisit' in copper. If a piece done in gold turns up n= ow that would be a big shocker but I would not be surprised to see base met= al examples, however its been at least 10 years since I got my silver coin = and I still haven't heard about any others, pewter or otherwise until this = copper example landed into David's deserving hand.
The go-to 'Steve's, Tannenbaum and Hayden neither had seen one before and = neither had the always 'go-to Mike guy' aka Ringo, still the best of handle= 's
David, if you read this and you care to take a picture of your coin and pos= t it and I'll go through my Noye's collection of photographs and find mine = and post it to see if anyone here has seen one.
These two coins beg the question why and I'm always a sucker for that plus = it might just be an "American" struck VP and perhaps an X-Ray analysis wou= ld be called for......what do you say John? A little scratch won't harm t= he prooflike surface of the reverse that much :)
Back to Fred W. for a second, he had come across this coin a few months bef= ore we saw each other in Vegas for EAC and he told me that he had something= put away for me and had not put it in his case because he knew I would wan= t it and felt that I should have it because of my interest in Voce Populi's= .
Evidently I had made an impression however minor compared to what he had do= ne with his mentor and friend Arnie. Good impressions are usually rewarded = while bad impressions almost never are and not easily forgotten.
Ending this with an acknowlegment of a good life to Arnie Margolis. Stan
