Update
Yes - gold on brass (Cu/Zn) exists for these denominations - I stand correc=
ted. Purdy's 8 Escudo CC is the "first" confirmed copper alloy (i.e., very =
low zinc (4%) and no tin) piece with no gold detected on three XRF spot ana=
lyses. Very unusual.
Read the Breen personal letters (two lots) at the Kolbe/Fanning auction. In=
credible letters in his last days. Its a shame how he ended ... they GOT TO=
ME ... incredible letters ... heard they brought strong FOUR figures ... n=
ot sure ... RS and Anton were there ... so Biall Jr. tells me ...=20
The last project for the CC8R book is to include all the Class 1 (Off-Metal=
) ANS pieces into Appendix 3 (ANS Collection). Will have to do this persona=
lly. In the Spring - no big deal ...=20
The Anton book is coming along ... the family has hired a professional writ=
er/editor to take over from Doug Anton who is to busy in his law practice t=
o complete the book. Hang in there Massachusetts ...=20
Picked up some new Kleeberg CC2R pieces - ALL unique.
At the electrum talk Oliver I gave my business card to Vagi - he seemed ver=
y interested but UNFORTUNATELY he is in FLORIDA - use to be in NY ... as he=
was for seven years. We shall see ... at the Mexican Proclamation Medals l=
ater in the day its amazing how generic/naive collectors are to alloy descr=
iptions ... do you really expect me to believe that every Mexican Proclamat=
ion Medal is gilt over bronze when gilting is present? Basically Wetterman =
just reciting Grove ... whatever ... so much WORK to be done in almost ever=
y field ...
The Mexican Coin Company was very interested in sending me samples for anal=
yses for various projects ... lets see what happens here ...
The Americana is next ...

collection Buell was the Taylor M.6-D XF-45 ... after I saw it in 1987 and=
won it I knew LC's were a thing in the past for good ... glad to see Craig=
e has come up with another of equal appeal ... some nice fresh material on =
the market ... good luck!=20

it came from the Randall hoard!

n this group was an 8 Escudo Contemporary Counterfeit. I will be analyzing =
it tonight after work and it seems its either copper or toned brass or zinc=
resembling copper. Impressive and important. No gilt or gold covering seem=
s visible on the coin. When we look at the Barerra we see for the different=
denominations of Spanish Mint Contemporary counterfeits for CAROLUS III,II=
II or Fedinand VII no brass 8 Escudos but we do see these listings for the =
lower donominations. My point is this specimen from the Ringo Collection St=
acks Schaumburg 2009 Auction:

hich are brass which are low weight and we see gold 2 escudo CC's which bas=

rass piece with the SAME coloration?

e uses the term "once gilt." Does any gold actually REMAIN on these 8 Escud=
os? As with all other denominations is it strictly gold or brass 8 Escudo C=
C's? Does a gilted brass 8 Escudo exist or can be verified by XRF?
