    Hi Guys!
I just stumbled across an obituary for Verne Walrafen. He passed away =
in April of 2012 and somehow I didn't see the announcement that was posted =
in the E-Sylum. Verne was not a C4 Member nor did he collect colonial coin=
    s. He had a passion for hobo nickels. But he did make a big numismatic co=
ntribution with his website that was more or less dedicated to the Gallery =
    Mint Museum.=20=20
    http://www.gmmnut.com/gmm/gmm51.html#boston
Now you might wonder what the connection is to colonial numismatics... =
There are some that frown on replicas, but I find a use for them as long a=
s they are not misrepresented. In generations past, collectors that couldn=
't afford certain varieties were content to have an electrotype - their ver=
sion of a reproduction. When I give a talk on collecting Red Book varietie=
s of NJ Coppers, I'm able to show mopst of the varieties except the Date Un=
der Plow Beam and the "WM" variety. But thanks to the Gallery Mint, I'm ab=
le to fill those slots with a replica which is properly marked "COPY".=20=20
Author, researcher, NJ Copper collector and C4 officer Buel Ish had wor=
ked with the Gallery Mint people to have custom error NJ Coppers struck, fo=
r the purpose of studying the cause and effect of the errors we encounter f=
    rom the original NJ Mints.=20=20
The Gallery Mint was responsible for striking the GSNA and NJNS commemo=
rative medals, based on the NJ Copper designs. The Gallery Mint products a=
re very collectible today and their various replicas of colonial coins can =
find a nice home in any collection.
I personally had the Gallery Mint engrave a punch for me, for the purpo=
se of counterstamping coins. In 2002, Lou Jordan's book about John Hull an=
d the Boston Mint was published. This timing was a happy coincidence ( ? )=
in that it just happened to be in the same year as the 350th anniversary o=
f the founding of the Boston Mint (1652). To commemorate this anniversary,=
I had the Gallery Mint make a script "NE" punch, imitating the "NE" that w=
as used on the first shillings made by Hull & Sanderson. The size of the p=
unch is such that it can't be confused with an original. At the C4 Meeting=
at the 2002 ANA Convention in NYC, I counterstamped NY Quarters with this =
punch and gave them out to those attending. Then a few months later, at th=
e C4 Convention in Boston, I counterstamped MA Quarters and gave them to th=
ose attending. I did make a few other counterstamped items, listed on the =
GMM website. The die is essentially retired (I think). The only other str=
ikes I made were on a few lead musket balls, which I flattened with a sledg=
e hammer and one gold tie tack, which was auctioned as a donated lot in a C=
4 Sale, and purchased by Bob Grellman's wife.
There are so many ways to have fun in this hobby! Now that Verne is go=
ne, I don't know how long his website will be on the internet. I assume th=
at after a period of time, if fees aren't paid, it'll disappear. And what =
    a shame that will be!
    But, I must work.
    Have FUN!
    Ray
