There was a time when contemporary counterfeits were a side venue and you p=
rimarily collected a major colonial issue ... today - from the clan I grew =
up with I have seen several people throw in the towel (so to speak) and jus=
t center on CCs due to rising prices in the major categories. My annual coi=
n budget today is a about $20,000/year. I was never disciplined enough to s=
it around and wait for the Americana Sale to add another NJ R7 for 10K (may=
be more today). To me this is ridiculous. Some people can do this like my f=
riend from the NW. I am jealous of this form of discipline/money - no doubt=
. For me its always been able to buy a steady stream of pieces for study/up=
grade/buying/selling - at will with little interference. The Blackmsiths wi=
thin my own collection like my NJ's I have hit the wall ... although the pr=
ices keep getting better like the Ringo group lot whose final price was imp=
ressive there is still not a company that can do this series the justice it=
deserves today in my opinion ... but its close! So to answer your question=
    :
How is it possible to draw the same enjoyment from collecting a rare coin t=
hat no one else cares about?
Personally - I think the more advanced the collector the less amount this f=
actor is of a concern to him/her ... I think there is a doctor in NJ who ye=
lled at me recently "I am OUT of NJ's!!! But he has found a new path of res=
earch and enjoyment with the ABILITY to buy ANY specimen he wishes - anytim=
e/anywhere - he again can FEELS total enjoyment. Bill Anton said to me last=
year at the Americana ... he said I looked around John ... in the auction =
room ... and they all looked miserable ... that's all he said ... then agai=
n ... no guts ... no glory ... or is it? ... no pain ... no glory <BG>.=20

that no one else cares about. I mean that in a rhetorical way. Is it as en=
joyable collecting r7 coins that may only cost $25 for a well worn and dama=
ged coin, as opposed to collecting a coin that meets that description in al=
l ways except that it may have cost you 5K because more people collect the =
variety. The question is harder to answer, in my mind, if the coin is in ex=
cellent condition. One might draw equal enjoyment from a beautiful 25.00 r7=
    and a 5k r7. what if the coins are 25.00 for a nice r7 vs. 5k for a misera=
ble r7 (say a Connecticut copper). I think the answer is obvious.=20
