For those of you who may not have heard, Billy Paul of American Heritage Minting passed away earlier this month, after a very long battle with multiple myeloma, way too young at 63 years old.
Billy was a fixture at most major coin shows. While he always had some colonial items (including probably the largest assortment of French Colonies pieces offered by any dealer other than Bob Vlack), he would occasionally turn up coins that were simply amazing. He had the rare ability to ferret coins out of hiding, and he traveled frequently to France and England, working contacts that he made over the course of 40 years....and that thrill of the hunt would often yield some long forgotten treasure (or. more often, a treasure that was completely unrecognized by the person who owned it and who would be flabbergasted by the size of the check they received!).
In just the last few years Billy turned up a full, blazing mint red New Jersey copper -- and, since something like that wasn't enough to rest his laurels on, a few years later he turned up THREE Uncirculated Connecticut coppers, one of which was nearly full red and simply the most gorgeous Connec this pair of eyes has ever seen. Not to mention the hundreds of really nice, though not quite Unc pieces that he managed to locate and get to customers around the world.
I knew Billy for the better part of two decades, and he was always fair, always honest, and always a LOT of fun to sit down and chat with. He had stories of "the good old days" that never failed to amaze and amuse. Unlike many coin dealers who seem harried, going from show to show, always trying to maximize their profit or play the slab game, Billy was a rarity. He was someone who had FUN doing what he did -- he enjoyed the thrill of the hunt, the pursuit of some coin that he may have heard of in passing years (or decades) earlier. He would take off on buying trips of weeks or months -- even long after his diagnosis! -- and he almost never failed to come home with a bag or two of goodies.
Billy will be sorely missed in this hobby, he was really something special.
Jeff Rock
