If he bought the piece a fair amount of time ago, then a junkbox may have been accurate -- there were still things to be found in them! Not 50 cent junkboxes, but dealers used to have $1, $5 and $10 ones and a weak VF/EF British halfpenny wouldn't have been a whole lot more than that 20-25 years ago. He may have owned it a long time before it was attributed as a Machins, of course.
The story I refuse to believe is the 1870-S Half Dime that was supposedly found in a junkbox. A Choice AU (now it's MS64 with gradeflation I think) half dime would have NEVER been in a junk box....
