Evening all,
York coins is offering a Cromwell token, and the web site states that it accompanied the Oct. 1773 issue of the magazine. I contacted Anthony Wilson (York Coins) to ask the source of that bit of information. He kindly replied with some links I'm posting here. The citation for the Cromwell token date, however, isn't in this material.
First is a John Kirk biography from *The Dictionary of National Biography *= Vol. XXXI

Second is a letter published in *The Gentlemen's Magazine (*1797 vil. 81) discussing the collecting of various tokens including, in which he was responding to a letter published an earlier issue of the magazine, the Kirk pieces. The writer makes reference to embossed cards that replaced the tokens. I wonder if any of those exist. Also in the letter is a reference to Spence leaving the coin business and transferring his dies to another dealer.
