I agree, Will. If this kind of stuff served as an entry point for more serious study, then fine. More likely though, that's as deep as the viewer goes, and that's what they are left with. But I was a history major, so it's probably some twisted, deeply rooted reaction on my part. I wish we had an equivalent to Garrison Keilor's P.O.E.M. (Professional Organization of English Majors) to join <s>.
