    Hi Guys,

Back to my library and little peace and quiet to enjoy thinking about=20
Colonial numismatics. So for starters, I think the 1606 King James=20
Charter "maybe" was exclusively granted to Virginia. But at least a=20
serious case can be made that it was also
granted to Maryland (see Jordan: Notre Dame Web Site: under the=20
"privileges of any Bishop of Durham" which Lou has amplified in other=20
    writings).=C2=A0

Having said that, I also thought it was worth saying that I don't think=20
this 1606 Charter granted to the Virginia Company has much to do with=20
the small copper Virginia Halfpenny coinage. The original Charter was=20
long ago revoked and a new (Colony initiated) more practical Bill was=20
authorized by the Virginia Assembly in 1769. That measure authorized=20
Treasurer Robert Carter Nicholas to obtain 2,500 pounds of copper=20
    halfpennies.

    The correspondence between
Nicholas and J Norton and Sons (Merchants for the Colony and mentioned=20
in my earlier post) is fascinating in that it chronicles all the back=20
and forth of getting the coinage made from a letter in December 1769 to=20
final delivery and Royal Proclamation to allow circulation in February=20
1775 after hostilities had already broken out.=C2=A0

Reading between the lines, I think part of the delay was that the=20
original Virginia Assembly Bill came under Lord Hillsbourough who=20
oversaw the American Colonies for the Crown and wanted to contain their=20
activities in every way. But the final approval, manufacture and=20
ultimate issuance under the King's proclamation happened under Lord=20
Dartmouth who was far more sympathetic to the Colonies. But this latter=20
part is total conjecture on my part. I never really liked Hillsbourough=20
    :)!

    Anyway...my two pence.

    Hi Guys,

Traveling now so can't do chapter and verse, but check out John Norton=20
and Sons:Merchants of London and Virginia (Frances Norton Mason) that=20
goes into the excruciating detail and back and forth of arranging to=20
have Virginia Halfpennies made in England for the Virginia Colony.=C2=A0

They were Merchants for the Colony. I am pretty sure they go into the=20
authorization as part of the contracting process.=C2=A0

    More when I am back.=C2=A0

    Hope this helps a little.

Also, see Crosby, p. 19. (Attached) =C2=A0Doesn't seem to preclude making=20
them in America and I spoke to a fellow in NC who claimed that he knew=20
of an early local issue, even paid him a little bit for information, but=20
he wasn't able to track down anything solid. =C2=A0The 1773-1774 issues wer=
    e
    definitely made in England.

ed to contain their activities in every way. But the final approval, manufa=
cture and ultimate issuance under the King's proclamation happened under Lo=
rd Dartmouth who was far more sympathetic to the Colonies. But this latter =
part is total conjecture on my part. I never really liked Hillsbourough :)!=
