Found the catalogue -- it rang a bell because I was at the sale in Pasadena! Not much in the way of colonials in it, 32 lots with the highlight being an Unc Mass half cent of a common variety.
In the introduction QDB says "The R.H. Gore, Jr. Collection was begun in the 1920's and continued for several decades thereafter. Mr. Gore is a true connoisseur, and over a period of time added many magnificent coins to his holdings." Unfortunately the sale doesn't say which are his coins and which are other consigners.
Gore has a biographical sketch at the beginning and the part of interest to us is that "For my alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, I started a collection of coins and paper money by design types in 1975. At this time the collection is fairly complete and needs only a few rarities. This collection also contains numerous examples of paper money, including specimens from each of the original states and the Continental Congress. Also included are several dozen examples of postage notes and fractional currency notes, and other items of interest including the gold bars salvaged from the Atlantic Ocean near Fort Pierce. Another area of the exhibit contains examples of Mexican, Spanish and Central American coins which circulated as legal tender in America during colonial times, in fact up to 1857."
