About a year ago I finally ran out of a bottle of Xylol (aka, Xylene) that = I had used for years. I searched ebay and found various sources selling 2-= 3 ounce bottles for in the $15 - $20 range if I recall. So I checked my lo= cal Home Depot and found it in gallon sized cans for around $20.00. So rig= ht now I have a can of it in my closet which still contains about 127.995 o= unces of the stuff. If I live to be 200 years old and amass a collection o= f 10,000 coins, I'll never use it all. Although it does make a great all a= round solvent too. I also use CARE, and still have about 80% of a bottle o= f the "good stuff" I bought about 10 years ago for around $50, from Don Mit= uzas I believe.
My routine is this:
With a Q-tip, thoroughly apply a coat of Xylol to all three sides of the co= in and allow it to dry. Using a camel hair brush designated only for "dry brushing", gently brush t= he coin to remove any residue or haze left by the Xylol. Using a Q-tip, apply two or three small dots of CARE onto the surface of th= e coin, and using a designated "wet brush", gently work the CARE all around= the surface of the coin. Repeat Step 3, above, to the other side of the coin. Using the CARE Q-tip from above, place a few dots of CARE onto the edge of = the coin and while holding the coin between my thumb and forefinger, gently= rotate the coin to apply CARE to the "third side".
One word of caution....if you are working on a "PDV" (painted die variety) = coin, use extreme caution as the Xylol could remove the "paint", as it is a= solvent. In these situations, I either carefully work around the paint, o= r if the coin already looks good, I just do a very light application of CAR= E.

Hi all - on the topic of coin preservation, how many of you still use xylol= to extract grime and dirt from early coppers? Is there now a better altern= ative that's equally safe for coins?
I used to buy bottles of xylol from EAC dealers, but was wondering if there= is a specific formulation that I can order via Amazon.com. If so, can you = please provide a link? I know xylol is used in a variety of applications an= d was unsure whether a specific formulation was ideal for copper coins, or = if you can just buy any old xylol from a hardware or industrials store.
I welcome insights from anyone, including those that posted on recent relat= ed threads on coin preservation such as Craig, Ray W., and Jeff R. (thanks = for your thoughts there too)
