NUMISMATICS: A CULT OF SOME SORT
An obituary published Saturday in the Chicago Tribune shows how you
can keep people guessing about what a "numismatist" is."Paul A. Downing, a retired savings and loan executive who once
served under former Gov. Jim Thompson, gained a reputation for
honesty and integrity but also displayed a mischievous wit that
left co-workers laughing or running for their dictionaries."He once introduced himself to a new secretary as a "numismatist,"
said one of his former employees at Uptown Federal Savings and Loan
in Chicago, where he worked the majority of his professional life."By day's end she was pretty sure he belonged to a cult of some
sort," said Dory Hofvander. "That evening she looked the word up
in the dictionary and found out he was a coin collector."- 2007-08-12
