Albansgulden Öffentlichkeit Deposited
A name given to the gold coins issued by the Knights of St. Alban at Mainz, who received the privi- lege of striking coins from the Emperor Maximilian I in 1518. The number was limited and they were distributed to the members of the Order on St. Martin's Day (November 11), and are consequently sometimes referred to as Martinsgulden. They bear on one side a figure of St. Alban holding his head in his hand.
