  • A general name for the earliest types of the Greek coins struck from circa B.C. 700 to B.C. 480. In this period " there is a gradual development from extreme rudeness of execution to more clearly defined forms characterised by stiffness and angularity of style. " This is the first of the art periods according to Head's classification, and the figures on the coins usually consist of animals, heads of animals, and human heads in profile.
