Definition
  • A French gold coin of the fourteenth cen- tury which bears on the obverse a full- length figure of the king in his royal robes, and he is usually represented standing un- der a Gothic canopy.

    A petit Royal d'Or was issued in the reign of Philip III called Mantelet d'Or.

    In the time of Edward IV the English applied the name Royal to the Noble (q.v.) ; and in the reign of Henry VII the double Ryal was called the Royal or Sov- ereign.
