Definition

• This term occurs in the laws of William I as given by Ingulphus, and according to Turner, History of the Anglo Saxons (ii. 135), it signifies " better pennies." Ruding (i. 110) observes that the word bener is omitted in all the later editions of these laws, and adds that " pos- sibly the word may be nothing more than the following one, dener, mis-spelled. "
