  • A French term used to in- dicate the variation between the actual value of the metal, and the denomination stamped on the coin. This difference in former years constituted the payment which the official who struck the coins re- ceived. See Slegelpenninge.

    Du Cange (i.) states that as early as the thirteenth century the name Brasangium was given to the official whose duty it was to determine the above-named variations. Sec Seignorage.
