Definition
  • An English gold coin, Struck in the reign of James I pursuant to a proclamation of October 20, 1604. Its original value was five shillings, which was raised to five shillings and sixpence in 1611. The union of the kingdoms is re- ferred to in the legend Henrcus rosas reg- na Jacobus , i.e., " Henry unites the roses, James unites the Kingdoms." This coin was discontinued in 1661- '62.
