Cardecu Publique Deposited
A silver coin of France, first issued in the reign of Henri III (1574- 1589), with a corresponding Huitieme d'Ecu. The name of the former coin was corrupted into Cardecu, and it was a legal tender in England in 1625 for nineteen Pence half Penny, during the suspension of the Tower mint at London, on account of the plague. There were varieties for Bearn, Navarre, Dauphiny, etc. See Rud- ing, Annals of the Coinage of Britain. 1840. (i. 382).
