Definition

• The name given to a variety of Decadrachm struck at Syracuse circa B.C. 480. They were issued in celebration of the victory of Gelon over the Carthaginians at Himera and were named from Demarete, the wife of Gelon.

  These coins were each worth ten Attic Drachms; the Sicilians called them Pentecontalitra on account of their weight.
