Ecu d'Or Pubblico Deposited
A gold coin of France introduced by Philip VI (1328-1350). The earliest types have a figure of the King seated, holding a shield in his hand, and this was imitated by Edward III in the Anglo-Gallic series. Under Charles VI (1380-1422) the new type, with the large shield on the obverse, was struck. This variety was copied in Gueldres by Maria of Brabant (1361-1399).
A Scottish gold coin issued in 1525 and again in 1543 has received the same name. See also Chaise.
