Definition

  • A gold coin of Portugal issued by Joannes II (1481-1495), and the half of the Justo (q.v.). It obtains its name from the device of a hand holding a sword (espada). A silver coin of the same type was issued by Alfonso V (1438-1481). See Spadin.
