  • The blank piece of metal which is to receive the impression for the coin. In old French the word is written flaon, and it is derived from flatum. The verb flare is employed to designate the casting of metal into a mold, and the Roman mint-masters were officially termed III viri A.A.A.F.F., i.e., Triumviri auro, argento, aeri, flando, feriundo.
