Griffon Public Deposited

Definition
  • A base silver coin struck in Brabant early in the fifteenth century, and corresponding to the Stuiver of the Low Countries. See ver der Chijs (passim). It receives its name from the figure on the obverse of a griffin holding in its claw a short sword or briquet. The inscription usually reads: DENARIS SIMPLEX NOMINATVS GRIFONVS.

    There are corresponding doubles and halves.
