Definition
  • A silver coin of Florence of the value of four Soldi or double the Popolio (q.v.). It was struck about the middle of the fourteenth century and continued in use until the period of the Medici Family. It is characterized by the representation of the armorial bearings of a large number of the Florentine nobility, e.g., the Houses of the Acciailoi, Capponi, Guicciardini, Lanfredini, Pandolfi, Strozzi, Venturi, etc.
