  • A name supposed by some modern writers to have been given to money perhaps issued by Gyges King of Lydia. The passage in Herodotus (i. 14) from which this inference is made is now interpreted differently. See Babelon, Traite des monnaies grecques et romaines. 1901-04 (i. 468).
