Wharton, in his Law Lexicon, 1864, states that this was the name given to "dues paid to lords of leets; also a fine of 40 pounds which the sheriff of Northumberland heretofore exacted of the inhabitants twice in seven years." It was abolished by a statute of 23 Henry VII c. 7.
