Definition

• A silver coin of the United States issued in 1900 as a memento of the Paris exposition and a mark of good will and appreciation to France for the services rendered during the Revolutionary War by General Lafayette.

  These coins were sold by popular subscription, and the proceeds were used toward paying for the erection of a statue of Lafayette in Paris. The issue consisted of fifty thousand pieces.
