Levant Dollar Öffentlichkeit Deposited

Definition
  • The name given to any coin which is employed in the Levant trade, but especially to the Maria Theresa Thaler of 1780. This piece is always struck with this date for commercial purposes, and is accepted in Zanzibar, Abyssinia, Madagascar, and many oilier countries. Its weight is a trifle over 433 grains, and its original fineness has been retained. In some of the African and Asiatic sections this coin is known as the Tallero del Levante, and in others as el Real. See Ernest and Wand.

Frederick II of Prussia issued Levant Dollars in 1766 and 1767 for trade with the Orient. These have his bust on the obverse and the motto SUUM-CUIQUE on the reverse.
