Lion Público Deposited
A billon coin of the Anglo-Gallic series, first issued by Edward I.
It derives its name from the representation, on the obverse, of a lion passant guardant, which was the heraldic bearing of Aquitaine. This device was previously incorporated by Henry II, with two lions passant guardant, the arms of Normandy, thus forming the coat since borne by the English Kings. See also Leeuw.
