Massachusetts Cent Public Deposited

Definition
  • This well-known coin first appeared in 1787 and the corresponding half Cent in the following year.

It was evidently the intention to issue coins of larger denominations also, as mention is made in Fleet's Pocket Almanack for the year 1789 that "a mint is erected on Boston Neek, for coining of gold, silver, and copper, of the same weight, alloy, and value as is fixed by the Resolve of Congress of the 8th of August, 1786. Copper only has yet been coined, viz: Cents and half Cents." See Crosby, Early Coins of America. 1875..
