Mexican Dollar Publique Deposited
Originally this was the popular name for the silver coin of eight Reales which was struck in Mexico, and largely used in the Orient. It is mentioned in this sense in as early as the beginning of the eighteenth century. Although the coin is no longer issued the name has survived to the present day and is now applied in the Far East to the Mexican Peso, which circulates for the exact amount of silver that it contains, and consequently has a fluctuating value. See Chopped Dollar.
