Morchen Öffentlichkeit Deposited

Definition
  • Morchen, also called Morchen and Murchen, were small uniface base silver coins, and they are mentioned in 1409 and 1425 in the mint regulation of Cologne. They circulated extensively in the Rhenish providences, and their value was the same as the Heller.

The name, meaning a small moor, was bestowed on them in derision, as they soon turned black on account of the small percentage of silver they contained. See Busch.
