Definition

• One who defaces coins, especially a person who clips or otherwise mutilates them for dishonest purposes. In a rare tract entitled Cocke Lorell's Boke (11), printed circa 1515, and reprinted by the Percy Society, occurs the passage: "Players, purse cutters, money baterers, Golde washers."
