Onion Penny Öffentlichkeit Deposited
An obsolete English dialect term, formerly used principally in Hampshire. The English Dialect Dictionary cites a manuscript glossary confpiled by W. Kennett, circa 1700, which reads: "At Silchester they find great plenty of Roman coins which they call Onion Pennies, from one Onion whom they foolishly faney to have been a great, and an inhabitant of this city."
