Oof Public Deposited
An English slang term for money, and a corruption of ooftish, i.e., from the German auf dem Tisch , meaning "on the table."
J. W. Pearce, in Modern Society (January 16, 1892), says: "Oof as a current pseudonym for money has been in use for about seven years, but ooftish, which also is Whitechapel slang for coin of the realm, has been in use in England over thirty years."
